WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn public attention during a midterm campaign rally by swapping his usual luxury suits for a relatively affordable brand, sparking online debate over the garment's overseas origins.
According to U.S. weekly magazine Newsweek and other media outlets on the 7th (local time), President Trump held up his suit jacket during a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on the 5th, revealing the brand label stitched inside.
The suit was from Jos. A. Bank, a brand under the men's apparel retailer Tailored Brands. Founded in Maryland in 1905, the brand offers a wide range of suits, from budget-friendly options priced at $149.99 to relatively high-end products costing up to $700.
While the exact price of the suit Trump wore to the rally has not been confirmed, the mere fact that Trump—known for favoring luxury brands—wore a mid-tier label became a major talking point.
During his time hosting the reality TV show The Apprentice in the 2000s, Trump was sponsored by the Italian luxury brand Brioni and has reportedly continued wearing Brioni suits ever since. Brioni suits typically retail anywhere from $5,500 to upwards of $16,000.
However, the choice also stirred controversy online regarding where Jos. A. Bank products are manufactured.
Critics pointed out that some products from the brand are made in countries like China and Bangladesh, which conflicts with President Trump’s core policy agenda prioritizing domestic manufacturing revival.
Derek Guy, a men’s fashion writer, posted on X (formerly Twitter): "Interesting. Jos. A. Bank suits are all made abroad, usually in countries like China or Bangladesh. Makes you wonder why Trump chose an inexpensive imported suit over an American-made one."
Josh Dorner, a Democratic communications aide, also wrote on X, "Amid the massive trade wars he started, Trump is out here proudly showing off a label from a suit not made in America."
