Volvo to Unveil ES90, its Next-Generation Electric Flagship Sedan, on March 5

Volvo Cars has revealed key technological details of its highly anticipated next-generation electric flagship sedan, the Volvo ES90, ahead of its global debut on March 5. The ES90 is the brand's first fully electric sedan built on the company's groundbreaking approach to future electric vehicle development, the 'Superset Tech Stack'.

This model represents a 'Software Defined Vehicle' (SDV) approach, designed to continuously evolve and improve through core computing technology and constant connectivity. Notably, it is the first in the brand to feature 'Dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin', delivering the most powerful core computing performance in Volvo's history. This enables the use of data, software, and AI technology to enhance safety and performance.

NVIDIA's DRIVE AGX Orin is an intelligent vehicle core computer that orchestrates various essential systems and processes within the vehicle at ultra-high speed. With a high computing power of approximately 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS), it manages AI-based cutting-edge active safety technologies, vehicle sensors, and efficient battery performance.

The DRIVE AGX Orin-based core computer boasts an eight-fold improvement in AI computing performance compared to the previous generation DRIVE AGX Xavier. This allows for a gradual expansion of deep learning models and neural network scale from 40 million to 200 million. This means that by collecting more data and continuously developing new models, customer experience and safety levels can be improved.

Self-Evolving Car

Developed on Volvo Cars' SPA2 architecture, the ES90 is the second model to feature the 'Superset Tech Stack' for next-generation electric vehicle development, following the EX90. It is a standard technology that will form the basis of all future electric vehicles, consisting of single hardware and software modules and systems.

This signifies a fundamental shift in how software is developed and used to enhance safety, technology, and overall performance levels throughout the vehicle's lifespan. New features or improvements can be quickly applied to all models based on the Superset Tech Stack through OTA (Over-The-Air) wireless updates.

This is a testament to how software has replaced hardware as the primary driver of innovation and value creation for customers. These updates may include new connectivity, safety technologies, and various improvements that can enhance the car's performance, such as improving battery range based on specific driving behavior.

Anders Bell, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Volvo Cars, said, "The ES90 is one of the most technologically advanced vehicles on the market today, based on the state-of-the-art Superset Tech Stack. Above all, it is designed with safety as our top priority and is designed to improve over time."

Safety Upgrades

The ES90 boasts an advanced sensor system consisting of one Lidar, five radars, eight cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, along with a driver understanding system located inside the vehicle, providing an exceptional understanding of the driving environment.

Volvo Cars' new standard safety technology, dubbed 'Safe Space Technology', protects occupants by detecting obstacles even in dark places and activating preemptive safety measures such as collision avoidance.

Volvo Cars' next-generation flagship electric sedan, the ES90, which embodies the brand's human-centered philosophy and presents a balance in life offered by future technology, will be unveiled to the world for the first time on March 5.
