DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – The enduring diplomatic relationship between Tanzania and Japan, spanning 64 years, was celebrated in Dar es Salaam at a reception marking the 65th birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan. The event, held at the residence of Japan’s Ambassador-Designate to Tanzania, Yoichi Mikami, highlighted the deep-rooted partnership and Japan’s significant contributions to Tanzania’s development.

Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, lauded the longstanding bond, emphasizing the pivotal role of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) since 1962. “JICA has been instrumental in our nation’s progress, delivering tangible benefits to Tanzanians at the grassroots level,” stated Ambassador Kombo. He cited key projects such as the Mfugale Flyover, Gerezani Bridge, Selander Bridge, and the Malindi Fish Market, which have significantly bolstered Tanzania’s infrastructure and agricultural sectors.

Japan’s support extends beyond infrastructure, encompassing crucial areas like energy, water, and capacity building, all contributing to Tanzania’s sustainable development goals. Ambassador Kombo also acknowledged the 32-year partnership through the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), established in 1993, which has fostered trade, investment, and sustainable development across the African continent.

“TICAD has been a cornerstone of our collaborative efforts, driving economic growth and development across Africa,” Ambassador Kombo added.

Yoichi Mikami, Japan’s Ambassador-Designate to Tanzania, expressed his enthusiasm for the robust bilateral ties and the growing cultural exchanges between the two nations. He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation, particularly through the TICAD framework. “This year, the ninth TICAD summit in Yokohama will provide an opportunity to further deepen our partnership,” Mikami stated. He also highlighted the upcoming Expo 2025 in Osaka-Kansai, where Tanzania’s National Day on May 25 will showcase the nation’s cultural richness and economic potential.

The Expo 2025, themed "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," will serve as a platform for global collaboration and innovation, further cementing the bond between Tanzania and Japan.

Both leaders expressed optimism for the future of the Tanzania-Japan relationship, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration in various sectors to ensure mutual growth and prosperity. The celebration served as a testament to the enduring friendship and shared commitment to sustainable development, not only within Tanzania but across the African continent.
