Participation from 160 Countries and Regions, A Showcase of Technology, Culture, and Cuisine… Expectations to Inject Hope into a Divided World

Osaka, Japan – The 2025 Osaka Expo grandly opened yesterday with a message of "unity and hope." With the participation of 160 countries and regions showcasing their cutting-edge technologies, unique cultures, and diverse cuisines, the expo will be held in Osaka, Japan until mid-October. Host country Japan hopes that this event will inject much-needed hope into the world.

Key attractions of this expo include a Martian meteorite, a beating artificial heart cultured from stem cells, and a Hello Kitty figure transformed into seaweed. Surrounding the various pavilions designed with the imagination of architects from around the world is the "Grand Ring," the world's largest wooden structure.

Sou Fujimoto, the designer of the Grand Ring, emphasized that this expo is a "precious opportunity for very diverse cultures and countries to come together and create diversity and unity."

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed his view that this event will contribute to restoring a sense of unity in a "divided society," telling reporters, "Through the expo, I want to revive the sense of unity in the world once again."

However, it remains uncertain whether these expectations will materialize amidst ongoing conflicts around the world and economic turmoil caused by U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs.

Above the Ukrainian pavilion, a sign reading "Not for sale" in yellow and blue evoked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's defiant remarks regarding the war with Russia. Russia did not participate in this expo. Tatiana Berezna, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Economy, said, "We want the world to know more about our resilience. We are creators, not destroyers."

Yahel Vilan, who leads Israel's relatively small pavilion showcasing a stone from the Western Wall in Jerusalem, stated, "We have come with a message of peace." Palestine also has its own pavilion.

The U.S. pavilion, themed "America the Beautiful," focuses on American landscapes, artificial intelligence, and space technology.

The Chinese pavilion, reminiscent of a calligraphy scroll, highlights green technology and lunar samples brought back by the Chang'e 5 and 6 missions as its main exhibits.

One of the more whimsical exhibits is 32 Hello Kitty figurines dressed up in various types of seaweed, symbolizing the diverse uses of seaweed. Additionally, a "human washing machine" that displays images according to the viewer's heartbeat is also attracting attention.

Furthermore, demonstrations of drone-like aircraft and the first public unveiling of a miniature artificial heart made from induced pluripotent stem cells took place. Byron Russell of the Pasona Group, which operates the exhibit, explained, "It actually beats."

Sustainability is a major theme running through this expo, with the spherical Swiss pavilion aiming for a minimal environmental footprint.

However, there is also criticism regarding the temporary nature of the expo. After the expo concludes in October, Osaka's artificial island Yumeshima is scheduled to be cleared for the construction of a casino resort. Japanese media reported that the recycling rate of the Grand Ring will be only 12.5%.
