Kazakhstan boasts a rich mineral resource base, encompassing solid minerals, groundwater, and hydrocarbons. The state's balance sheet currently lists 355 hydrocarbon deposits.
Akbarov, a [position/title], highlighted the nation's promising prospects for discovering new hydrocarbon deposits. Geologists have identified 15 sedimentary basins with estimated conditional fuel resources of around 76 billion tons.
While the five developed basins, notably the Caspian basin (contributing 80% of the resource base), currently dominate oil and gas production, five additional understudied basins offer substantial potential. These include the North-Turgai, Aral, Syrdarya, Shu-Sarysu, and Priirtysh sedimentary basins. Akbarov emphasized the significant untapped hydrocarbon potential within these basins.
To further explore these promising regions, Kazakhstan is undertaking regional studies using various geological and geophysical methods. A notable example is the 2D seismic survey in the Eastern and Western sections of the Aral basin, covering an area of 56,000 square kilometers. Preliminary estimates based on these studies suggest the Zapadny area holds approximately 800 million tons of forecasted resources. Additionally, the geology committee is set to commence exploration activities in the Syrdarya sedimentary basin later this year.
