Tripoli, Libya – Mellitah Oil & Gas Company has successfully contained a critical hydraulic control fluid leak at the eastern well complex of its submerged wells on the Sabratha offshore platform, located in the Bahr Al-Salam field, averting a potential major disruption to Libya's natural gas supply.
The company announced that the leak, discovered during routine operational checks, posed a significant threat to production at the eastern complex. Had it gone unchecked, the incident could have resulted in the loss of approximately 160 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, a substantial portion of the field's output.
"This leak presented a serious challenge to our operations," stated a spokesperson for Mellitah Oil & Gas. "The potential loss of 160 million cubic feet per day would have severely impacted the coastal pipeline, which is the lifeline for numerous critical industries and power generation facilities across Libya."
The coastal pipeline supplies natural gas to key infrastructure, including power plants responsible for the nation's electricity grid, cement factories vital for reconstruction efforts, and the Libyan Iron and Steel Company, a major industrial employer. Any disruption would have triggered widespread energy shortages, potentially leading to power outages, industrial slowdowns, and economic instability.
The Bahr Al-Salam field, operated by Mellitah Oil & Gas, a joint venture between Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Eni, is a crucial source of natural gas for the Libyan domestic market. The field's output is essential for maintaining energy security and supporting the country's economic recovery.
The company's management commended the swift and decisive action of its technical teams, who worked around the clock to isolate and repair the leak. "Our teams demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in addressing this critical situation," said a senior company official. "Their tireless efforts ensured the continuity of production and prevented a potentially devastating impact on the national energy supply."
This successful intervention underscores the importance of robust maintenance and rapid response protocols in offshore oil and gas operations. The incident highlights the vulnerability of energy infrastructure and the critical role played by skilled technicians in safeguarding national resources.
Mellitah Oil & Gas reiterated its commitment to maintaining safe and reliable operations, ensuring the continuous supply of natural gas to meet the demands of the Libyan people and industries. The company remains focused on maximizing production from the Bahr Al-Salam field while adhering to the highest safety and environmental standards.
