Seoul, South Korea – KT Corp., a major telecommunications company in South Korea, has introduced a new service called "Safe QR Service" designed to protect users from the increasing threat of QR code phishing, commonly known as "qusin."
QR code phishing involves the creation of malicious QR codes that, when scanned by a smartphone, can install harmful applications or redirect users to malicious websites. Given the widespread use of QR codes for various purposes, including accessing online services without typing lengthy URLs, these scams have become increasingly prevalent.
KT's Safe QR Service addresses this issue by scanning QR codes and instantly detecting if they link to malicious app installation URLs or illegal websites. If a suspicious link is identified, the service will block access and display a warning message. For new and unverified URLs, the service will prompt users to confirm if they wish to proceed.
The service is freely available to all users through the MyKT app, eliminating the need for login.
"We have launched the Safe QR Service to protect our customers' personal information and prevent financial fraud," said Hyun-Seok Lee, Executive Vice President of KT's Customer Business Division. "KT will continue its efforts to provide a safe and secure communication environment, safeguarding our customers from various digital threats such as spam and phishing."
With this new service, KT aims to enhance digital security and protect users from the growing number of QR code phishing attacks.
