Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province – Gwangmyeong City is set to host its annual flagship event, 'Festival Gwangmyeong,' on October 3rd and 4th, 2025, transforming the bustling streets around Cheolsan Station into a vibrant cultural hub. The festival, which anticipates attracting over 60,000 visitors annually, promises two days of immersive musical performances and engaging participatory programs.
A Street Transformed into a Grand Stage For the duration of the festival, an eight-lane road in the vicinity of Cheolsan Station, a major transportation artery on Subway Line 7, will be fully controlled and repurposed as a sprawling street plaza. This unique spatial arrangement allows for the creation of multiple stages and dedicated zones for various activities. Attendees can look forward to diverse artistic performances, alongside nostalgic attractions such as a retro roller rink and a variety of interactive recreational programs designed for all ages.
Originating as a street festival in 2022, 'Festival Gwangmyeong' evolved into a full-fledged music festival in 2023, solidifying its reputation as a premier cultural event in Gwangmyeong City. The city's commitment to fostering a dynamic cultural landscape is evident in the festival's continued expansion and diverse offerings.
Inauguration of the 2nd Gwangmyeong Music Hall of Fame Inductee A highlight of this year's festival will be the special induction ceremony for Han Young-ae, widely revered as the "Empress of Korean Blues," into the Gwangmyeong Music Hall of Fame (GMHOF) as its second honoree. The ceremony and a commemorative performance by Han Young-ae herself are scheduled for the evening of October 4th at the festival grounds.
The Gwangmyeong Music Hall of Fame is a significant initiative spearheaded by Gwangmyeong City, designed to enhance the sustainability of 'Festival Gwangmyeong' and deepen its connection with local culture. Its core mission is to celebrate and preserve the legacies of legendary musicians who have made profound contributions to the history of Korean popular music, thereby contributing to the development of popular music with Gwangmyeong as a central hub.
Han Young-ae's distinguished career spans nearly half a century. She began her musical journey in the mid-1970s with the folk group "Sunflower" (해바라기) before joining the influential blues band "Sinchon Blues" (신촌블루스). Her powerful vocals and deeply reflective lyrics have resonated with generations, with iconic songs such as "Yeoulmok" (여울목), "Nugu Eopso?" (누구없소), "Joyul" (조율), and "Bureoora Barama" (불어오라 바람아) cementing her status as a national treasure. The Gwangmyeong Music Hall of Fame Selection Committee acknowledged her enduring dedication to her craft and her profound impact on the Korean music scene as key reasons for her induction.
To ensure impartiality and expertise in the selection process, Gwangmyeong City has partnered with the Korean Popular Music Awards Selection Committee (KMA), the esteemed organization responsible for presenting the prestigious Korean Popular Music Awards. This collaboration underscores the city's commitment to recognizing musical excellence with the highest standards of professionalism. Last year, acclaimed singer-songwriter Kim Chang-wan was honored as the inaugural inductee into the Gwangmyeong Music Hall of Fame, setting a high precedent for the artists to be recognized.
Gwangmyeong City anticipates that the 2025 Festival Gwangmyeong, with its vibrant array of performances and the special induction of Han Young-ae, will offer profound resonance and emotional experiences for all attendees, further cementing its place as a significant cultural event in Korea.
