DAEJEON — The 14th "I am Ottugi" Festival took place on October 7 at the Daejeon Expo Citizen's Plaza, organized by the Daejeon Association for Spinal Cord Injuries.
Now in its 14th year, the festival is designed to support individuals who have suffered spinal cord injuries from sudden accidents or illnesses, encouraging them to rise up like the traditional Korean "Ottugi" (tumbler doll) and successfully reintegrate into society. The event also serves as a meaningful gathering where people with and without disabilities come together in harmony.
The day's program featured an official commemorative ceremony followed by a variety of engaging side events.
The opening ceremony kicked off with a celebratory performance by the Donggeurami Arts Troupe, followed by the opening declaration, a national salute, the presentation of commendations to meritorious individuals, an encouraging address, and the official closing and "I am Ottugi" declaration. The accompanying events included an Ottugi marathon, an art contest, and a talent show, providing participants with opportunities to build camaraderie and strengthen mutual bonds.
Park Yeon-byeong, the Deputy Mayor of Daejeon's Administrative Affairs, stated, "Through today's activities—drawing pictures together, showcasing individual talents, and sharing laughter—we hope that unfamiliarity and prejudice will diminish while mutual understanding deepens. Daejeon City remains committed to ensuring that individuals with spinal cord injuries can lead the lives they desire as equal members of our local community."
