Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean government is expanding its affordable housing program to cater to a wider range of residents, including low-income youth, elderly individuals, and military personnel. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport announced today that it will supply 1,983 units of specialized public rental housing in the second half of this year.

These new housing units will be constructed in 11 cities and counties across the country, including Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Daejeon, and Gangwon-do. The initiative aims to provide tailored housing solutions to meet the specific needs of various demographic groups.

Targeted Housing for Specific Needs

Youth in Tech Hubs: A 304-unit complex in Seongnam's Bundang district will be dedicated to young professionals working in the nearby Pangyo Techno Valley. This development will include not only affordable housing but also communal spaces such as libraries and startup centers, fostering a supportive environment for young workers.
Military Personnel: To address the housing challenges faced by military personnel stationed in remote areas, the government will construct a 300-unit complex in Inje County, Gangwon-do. This development is designed to promote civil-military cooperation and provide comfortable housing for those serving in the region.
Families with Young Children: A family-friendly housing complex with 380 units is slated for construction in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. The development will include childcare facilities and be conveniently located near Yeongdeungpo-gu Station, making it an attractive option for families with young children.
Elderly Residents: Recognizing the unique needs of the elderly, the government will build 310 units of senior-friendly housing in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, and Yanggu County, Gangwon-do. These units will feature accessibility features such as sliding bathroom doors and grab bars.

Tailored Approach to Affordable Housing

The specialized public rental housing program offers a flexible approach, allowing local governments to customize the eligibility criteria, selection process, and tenancy terms based on the specific needs of their communities. This tailored approach ensures that the housing provided aligns with the unique characteristics of each region.

Government Support

The government will provide financial support through the Housing and Urban Guarantee Fund to facilitate the construction of these specialized housing units. By investing in affordable housing, the government aims to address the growing demand for affordable and accessible housing options across the country.

Expanding Affordable Housing Options

The expansion of the specialized public rental housing program is part of the government's ongoing efforts to provide affordable housing options for a diverse range of residents. By offering tailored housing solutions, the government aims to improve the quality of life for low-income individuals, families, and seniors.
