Seoul, South Korea – The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) announced today that it will be implementing a special management period for the delivery industry from January 13th to February 7th to prevent overwork among delivery workers and ensure smooth delivery services during the Lunar New Year holiday.
According to MOLIT, the daily parcel volume is expected to increase by about 9% from the usual 17 million boxes to 18.5 million boxes in the lead-up to the Lunar New Year.
To cope with the surge in deliveries, delivery companies will be deploying an additional 5,200 workers, including drivers, loaders, and sorters, during the special management period.
In an effort to prevent overwork among delivery workers, major delivery companies will be limiting pickups one or two days before the holiday to ensure that workers have sufficient rest during the holiday period. Additionally, health managers will be stationed at each branch to monitor the health of workers daily and ensure that those who show signs of illness take immediate breaks.
To ensure smooth delivery services during the peak season and prevent a surge in deliveries at specific times, MOLIT has encouraged local governments and public institutions to place orders for holiday goods in advance.
"During the special management period for Lunar New Year deliveries, we will make every effort to prevent overwork among workers while ensuring smooth delivery services," said Jo Tae-young, Director of the Living Logistics Policy Division at MOLIT. "We kindly ask for your understanding if there are any delays in delivering some items."
