CHEONAN, South Korea – Cheonan City's Dujung Library (Director Lee Chung-mi) has announced a special exhibition, "Today's Children, Tomorrow's Children's Room," to commemorate the 100th day since the opening of its groundbreaking "Tomorrow's Children's Room." The exhibition, which began recently and will run until June, offers a glimpse into the year-long journey of creating this unique space and highlights the diverse content within its innovative "0813 Workshop."
Organized by the Seed Foundation for Library and Culture, the exhibition showcases the development process of the newly designed children's area. Visitors can explore insights from expert interviews who contributed to the project and get a preview of the resources and materials available in the 0813 Workshop.
The exhibition is being held in the first-floor lobby of the Dujung Library and will be open to the public until June 15th. To further engage visitors, the library will host bi-weekly guided tours every Thursday. These "rounding programs" will provide an in-depth look at the exhibition and the 0813 Workshop itself. Interested individuals can apply for the rounding program through the Cheonan City Libraries website.
The "Tomorrow's Children's Room" represents a novel approach to children's library spaces, seamlessly integrating a traditional reading area with an interactive workshop. The space features curated bookshelves organized around 13 different themes, encouraging exploration and discovery. Adjacent to this is the "0813 Workshop," a dynamic area equipped with over 170 types of materials and tools, along with spacious work tables and access to an outdoor courtyard. This innovative design has quickly made the "Tomorrow's Children's Room" a beloved destination for young learners in Cheonan.
A representative from the Dujung Library emphasized the thoughtful planning behind the new space, stating, "The Tomorrow's Children's Room was conceived by prioritizing the experiences of children throughout the entire process of space design and content planning, as we considered the future of public libraries for our young patrons. We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for today's children to anticipate and imagine the new experiences they will have in the Tomorrow's Children's Room."
The Dujung Library's initiative reflects a growing trend in library services to create more engaging and interactive environments for children, fostering creativity, exploration, and a love of learning beyond traditional reading. The "Tomorrow's Children's Room" serves as a model for future library spaces, recognizing the evolving needs and interests of young minds.
