DAEGU, South Korea – Police have launched a series of raids on the Daegu Metropolitan Council and five district councils, including those in Gunwi-gun, Dalseo-gu, Dong-gu, Buk-gu, and Seo-gu, on suspicion of inflating overseas business trip expenses and other alleged financial irregularities. The raids, initiated by the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Investigation Unit of the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency, began at 9:00 AM on May 20, 2025.

Authorities are currently securing documents related to overseas business trip expenses incurred by council members over the past three years from the administrative offices of the targeted councils. The police aim to verify if expenses were deliberately inflated beyond actual costs, constituting a misuse of public funds.

This widespread investigation stems from a formal referral by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC). The ACRC had previously conducted a comprehensive audit of overseas travel by 243 local councils nationwide, covering a three-year period from 2022 to 2024. Their findings, released earlier this year, revealed a startling 405 instances where local councils had disbursed more than the actual cost of airfare for overseas trips, pointing to systemic irregularities.

A police official, while confirming the ongoing investigation based on the ACRC's referral, stated that further details could not be disclosed at this preliminary stage. The raids signify a significant escalation in efforts to crack down on alleged corruption within local government bodies in South Korea, particularly concerning the transparent and accountable use of public funds allocated for official travel.
