Vientiane, Laos – The Laotian government is grappling with the issue of overloaded trucks causing significant damage to the country's road infrastructure.
Ngampasong Muangmani, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, recently highlighted the problem during a parliamentary session. He noted that a reduction in the number of weigh stations has contributed to increased road damage.
To address this issue, the ministry is taking several steps:
Expanding the Weigh Station Network: The government is investing in building new weigh stations, upgrading existing ones, and reopening abandoned facilities.
Mobile Weighing Units: Mobile weighing units have been deployed to conduct inspections on the move, particularly on key routes like Route 3, which connects China and Thailand.
Public Awareness Campaigns: The ministry is educating truck operators and the public about the negative impacts of overloading.
Enforcing Regulations: Stricter enforcement of weight limits and penalties for violations is being implemented.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. The limited number of weigh stations and outdated equipment hinder effective monitoring. Additionally, some transport operators, especially those involved in the mining industry, are known to circumvent weight restrictions, exacerbating the problem.
The Laotian government is determined to address these challenges and protect its road infrastructure. By expanding the weigh station network and investing in modern technology, the country aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of its transportation system.
