HARBIN, China – South Korean speed skater Cha Min-kyu captured his second medal of the Asian Winter Games on Tuesday, taking silver in the men's 1,000-meter race. Cha clocked a time of 1:09.63 at the Heilongjiang Ice Events Training Center Speed Skating Oval, finishing just behind China's Ning Zhongyan, who set a new Asian Games record of 1:08.81. Lian Ziwen, also of China, rounded out the podium with a bronze medal finish (1:09.68).
Skating in the third-to-last pair, Cha set the provisional fastest time, guaranteeing himself at least a bronze. However, Ning's blistering final-heat performance relegated Cha to silver. This medal comes after Cha's silver in the men's team sprint earlier in the week. The 1,000m race marked the conclusion of the speed skating events at the Harbin Games.
