Seoul, South Korea – In a significant escalation of the ongoing political turmoil, a coalition of 2,645 South Korean musicians has issued a joint statement demanding the immediate impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol. The group, which includes singers, instrumentalists, producers, music educators, and critics, condemned the president’s actions as a “rebellion” against the constitution.
The declaration, released on [date], asserts that President Yoon has violated the constitution and betrayed his oath of office by attempting a coup. The musicians further criticized the ruling People Power Party for failing to impeach the president despite overwhelming evidence.
“The president, who planned and declared an unconstitutional state of emergency, is no longer the president of a democratic republic,” the statement reads. “The politics that shield the ringleader of a rebellion must be thrown into the dustbin of history.”
The musicians affirmed their commitment to democracy, stating, “Music is on the side of a democratic republic. That is the reason for music's existence and the joy of musicians. Songs are completed in the square. Today, the musicians of the democratic republic join hands with the citizens and shout for democracy.”
The declaration represents a broad cross-section of the South Korean music industry, with participants from diverse genres and roles. It follows a similar statement issued by 762 musicians on December 13, which also called for President Yoon's impeachment.
The recent political instability in South Korea has sparked widespread protests and calls for the president's removal from office. The musicians' declaration is the latest sign of growing discontent among the South Korean public.
