SEOUL, South Korea – The Korea Confucian Culture Promotion Agency (Hanyujin) and the esteemed Hansan Yi Clan Association, one of Korea's prominent ancestral lineages, have officially entered into a collaborative agreement aimed at bolstering the preservation and promotion of Korean Confucian culture. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on April 1st at a ceremony held at the Hansan Yi Clan Association's headquarters in Seoul, marking a significant step towards safeguarding invaluable historical and cultural assets.

The partnership underscores a shared commitment between Hanyujin, a leading institution dedicated to the advancement of Korean Confucian heritage, and the Hansan Yi Clan Association, the custodian of a rich legacy spanning centuries. The MOU outlines a framework for extensive cooperation across various domains, all geared towards raising awareness and appreciation for Korea's Confucian roots and traditional culture.

A highlight of the signing ceremony was the generous donation of 73 historically significant artifacts by the Hansan Yi Clan Association to Hanyujin. This remarkable contribution includes "Mogeunjip," the collected writings of the revered early Joseon Dynasty Neo-Confucian scholar Mogeun Yi Saek (1328-1396), and "Jonggyecheop," a meticulously maintained genealogical record of the clan. The donated collection also features a wealth of ancient documents and rare books, offering invaluable insights into the social structures, governance, and cultural practices of past eras, particularly the traditions upheld within the Hansan Yi clan.

Lee Sang-gu, Chairman of the Hansan Yi Clan Association, expressed his optimism about the collaboration, stating, "This agreement provides a crucial platform for ensuring the secure preservation of our clan's ancestral heritage. We anticipate that Hanyujin's expertise in management, research, and exhibition will significantly contribute to honoring the legacy of our forefathers."

Jeong Jae-geun, Director of Hanyujin, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the broader significance of the partnership. "This MOU represents a meaningful stride in our mission to adapt and disseminate the enduring values of traditional Korean culture for contemporary society. By working closely with the Hansan Yi Clan, we can effectively safeguard these precious artifacts and invigorate the study and appreciation of Confucian culture," Director Jeong remarked.

The collaborative endeavors outlined in the MOU encompass a wide range of activities, including:

Joint Organization of Cultural Events: Hosting festivals, seminars, and exhibitions to showcase Confucian principles and traditional Korean arts and customs.
Academic Resource Development: Pooling resources for the collection, research, and scholarly utilization of historical materials related to Confucianism and Korean studies.
Character Education Initiatives: Designing and implementing educational programs rooted in traditional cultural values to foster ethical development.
Cultural Exchange and Content Creation: Collaborating on the production of digital content and engaging in cultural exchange programs to reach wider audiences.
The donated artifacts will be meticulously preserved and managed by Hanyujin's team of experts. Plans are underway to create a comprehensive digital archive of the collection, ensuring its accessibility to researchers, academics, and the general public both domestically and internationally. This initiative will not only safeguard these historical treasures but also facilitate deeper scholarly inquiry into Korea's rich cultural heritage.

This partnership between the Korea Confucian Culture Promotion Agency and the Hansan Yi Clan Association serves as a model for future collaborations between cultural institutions and ancestral clans, highlighting the importance of collective efforts in preserving and promoting Korea's unique cultural identity for generations to come. The donation of these significant artifacts marks a pivotal moment in this partnership, promising a wealth of new opportunities for research, education, and cultural enrichment.
