Daejeon, South Korea – In a significant move to bolster higher education in the region, Chungnam National University and Kongju National University have agreed to merge. The two institutions, both renowned national universities with over 70 years of history in the Daejeon and Chungnam provinces, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Tuesday.

The merger aims to create a more competitive and globally recognized university, capable of addressing the challenges posed by a declining birthrate and intensifying competition in higher education. By combining their resources and expertise, the two universities hope to enhance their educational and research capabilities and better serve the needs of their respective regions.

A Combined Force

The combined institution would have a significant enrollment of 7,375 students and a faculty of 4,352, based on 2025 figures. The merger is expected to create a new educational powerhouse in the region, capable of competing on a global scale.

Focus on Global University Project

One of the first major challenges for the merged university will be the Global University 30 Project, a South Korean government initiative aimed at fostering innovation in higher education. The merged institution plans to apply for this project as a combined entity, aiming to become the first "super-regional" university to be selected.

Both universities have previously attempted to join the project, but were unsuccessful. However, officials are optimistic that their combined strengths will increase their chances of being selected.

A Gradual Process

While the specific timeline for the merger has yet to be determined, officials anticipate that the integration process will be completed within five years, coinciding with the duration of the Global University 30 Project.

Key issues such as the name of the merged university, the location of the main campus, and the selection of a president will be decided through careful deliberation and consultation with faculty, staff, and students. The integration of academic programs will also be carried out gradually, with input from faculty and students.

A New Era for Higher Education

"The merger with Kongju National University is a significant opportunity to strengthen our position as a leading national university," said Chungnam National University President Kim Jung-gyeom. "We will ensure that the merger process is conducted with respect for all stakeholders and that the combined institution is able to achieve even greater heights."

Kongju National University President Im Kyung-ho echoed these sentiments, stating that the merger is a "necessary step" to address the challenges facing higher education and to better serve the needs of society.
