Mokpo, South Korea – In a significant step towards improving public transportation, Mokpo City has become the first city in South Korea to introduce a fully public bus system. The new system was officially launched on January 6th, marking a new era for the city's transportation infrastructure.
For years, Mokpo's bus system had been plagued by operational issues, including company closures, strikes, and fuel payment defaults, leading to significant disruptions in service and causing considerable inconvenience to residents. In response to these challenges, the city conducted extensive public consultations and developed a comprehensive plan to establish a sustainable public transportation system.
The newly implemented public bus system involves a complete overhaul of the existing routes, a combination of direct city management and contracted operations, and a competitive bidding process for routes. This integrated approach aims to ensure the stability and efficiency of bus services while providing residents with more reliable and convenient transportation options.
"The public bus system, which was created together with our citizens, is the first of its kind in South Korea and is a pioneering policy that is drawing attention from other local governments," said Mokpo Mayor Park Hong-ryul. "We will strive to make our public buses more friendly, safe, and convenient, so that they become a beloved mode of transportation."
To enhance the overall passenger experience, the city has introduced a fleet of eco-friendly electric low-floor buses equipped with LED information displays. Additionally, Mokpo plans to further improve bus services by upgrading the bus information system (BIS), expanding smart bus stops, and constructing a public bus depot.
The successful launch of Mokpo's public bus system is expected to serve as a model for other cities in South Korea seeking to improve their public transportation infrastructure. By prioritizing the needs of its citizens and investing in a sustainable transportation system, Mokpo City has taken a significant step towards creating a more livable and connected community.
