SINGAPORE — Global star Lee Jung-jae has etched his name into film history, becoming the first Korean national to receive the prestigious Charlie Chaplin Award for cinematic achievement. The honor, presented at the Chaplin Award Asia ceremony in Singapore on October 3rd, 2025 (local time), recognizes his significant contributions to the world of film.

The Chaplin Award, one of the most highly regarded accolades in the global film community, is presented by the Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) in New York. Established in 1972 to commemorate Charlie Chaplin's return to the United States after a period of exile, the award annually honors legendary figures who have demonstrated exceptional merit in cinema.

A Beacon of Asian Cinema 

In 2018, the Asia section of the award was newly established, given to only one individual each year. Past recipients of the Asian honor have predominantly been acclaimed figures from Chinese-language cinema, including director Zhang Yimou and actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Lee Jung-jae’s win marks a watershed moment, as he is the first Korean to be recognized in this institutional category.

According to his agency, Artist Company, Lee was selected as the first Korean honoree in recognition of his enduring and positive impact on Asian film arts through works that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Upon accepting the award, Lee Jung-jae expressed both gratitude and a sense of gravity, stating, "Receiving an award given in the name of the respected filmmaker, artist, and artist Charlie Chaplin makes me nervous and, because of the weight of it, even more trembling." He pledged to uphold the honor, adding, "As one of Asia's filmmakers, I will strive to have a positive influence."

From 'Squid Game' to 'Star Wars' 

Lee’s global profile skyrocketed following his starring role as Seong Gi-hun in the sensational Netflix original series, 'Squid Game.' The show became a worldwide phenomenon, earning Lee critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including an Emmy Award, and demonstrating the power of Korean content on the international stage.

Capitalizing on his newfound global fame, Lee Jung-jae has successfully transitioned to English-language productions. Last year, he took on the role of Jedi Master Sol in the Disney+ original series 'Star Wars: The Acolyte,' set in the High Republic era of the Star Wars universe. This role not only marked his first major English-language performance but also made him the first Asian actor to portray an original Jedi Master in a live-action Star Wars series, further solidifying his status as a key figure bridging Asian and Western cinema.
