Chungnamdo, South Korea – Chon Hee-kyung, the newly appointed President of the Chungnam Institute, has embarked on an ambitious initiative to strengthen collaboration between the research institution and local governments across Chungcheongnam-do province. The institute announced on April 3rd the launch of a 'series of meetings with mayors and county heads,' designed to foster a deeper understanding of regional challenges and facilitate the development of effective, field-based policies.
This proactive outreach aims to inject renewed dynamism into the Chungnam Institute's 'City/County Policy Cooperation Group,' a long-standing program recognized for its commitment to on-the-ground research and localized solutions. By engaging directly with local leaders, President Chon seeks to ensure that the institute's research agenda is closely aligned with the pressing needs and priorities of each municipality.
Following her inauguration in March, President Chon's first official engagement was a meeting with Choi Won-cheol, the Mayor of Gongju City, where the Chungnam Institute is headquartered. This initial meeting underscored the institute's commitment to its host community. Subsequently, on April 2nd, President Chon met with Kim Dong-il, the Mayor of Boryeong City. Discussions during this meeting centered on strategies to address key local projects, with the participation of prominent Chungnam Institute researchers ensuring a focus on practical and impactful policy recommendations.
The Chungnam Institute is currently involved in several significant research endeavors impacting the region. These include a project focused on establishing Boryeong City as a Resilience Hub under the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Northeast Asia Office (UNDRR), aiming to enhance the city's capacity to withstand and recover from disasters. Additionally, the institute is developing a fundamental plan for the creation of a West Coast Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Hub Cluster, a strategic initiative with significant implications for environmental sustainability and economic development in the region.
President Chon's commitment to engaging with all 15 cities and counties in Chungcheongnam-do is evident in her upcoming schedule. Following the successful meetings in Gongju and Boryeong, she is slated to visit Geumsan County on April 4th and Gyeryong City on April 15th, with further visits planned to complete her tour of the province.
In a statement, President Chon emphasized the Chungnam Institute's role as a vital link between research and practical governance. "The Chungnam Institute is a field-oriented policy research institution deeply rooted in the region," she stated. "Our mission is to generate tangible results and cultivate successful outcomes for the critical issues facing the province, its cities, and its counties. This series of meetings with our esteemed mayors and county heads provides an invaluable platform for open communication and robust collaboration. By sharing the challenges faced by our communities, we can collectively strive to produce superior research outcomes that will ultimately contribute to building a stronger and more prosperous Chungnam."
This initiative signals a proactive and collaborative approach by the new leadership of the Chungnam Institute, with a clear focus on leveraging research expertise to address the specific needs and aspirations of each locality within the province. The outcomes of these discussions are anticipated to shape the institute's future research direction and its contribution to the overall development of Chungcheongnam-do.
