Seoul, South Korea – Renowned South Korean artist, Nam Ki-hee, has unveiled her latest solo exhibition, "The Emptiness of Self," at the La Mere Gallery in Seoul. The exhibition, which ran from January 8th to 13th, 2025, presented a profound exploration of the concept of "Muhayujihyang," a state of being where nothing exists, as described in the philosophy of Zhuangzi.
Through a series of abstract paintings, Nam Ki-hee invites viewers to embark on a visual journey into the depths of the human psyche. Her works, characterized by muted color palettes, irregular lines, and thick textures, evoke a sense of tranquility and introspection. The artist explained, "The title 'The Emptiness of Self' reflects my desire to empty myself and observe the world with a clear mind."
Inspired by the philosophical teachings of Zhuangzi, Nam Ki-hee has developed a unique visual language to convey her understanding of "Muhayujihyang." By employing abstract forms, she explores complex themes such as the interconnectedness of all things, the impermanence of life, and the search for inner peace. The artist's works often depict intricate patterns and layers, symbolizing the intricate nature of human experience.
"I wanted to express the multifaceted emotions that we experience throughout life, from joy and sorrow to hope and despair," said Nam Ki-hee. "By using abstract forms, I aim to create a universal language that resonates with people on a deep emotional level."
The exhibition was met with critical acclaim, with many praising Nam Ki-hee's ability to transform complex philosophical concepts into visually stunning works of art. As a seasoned artist with numerous exhibitions to her name, Nam Ki-hee continues to be a leading figure in the Korean art scene.
