Asan – The South Chungcheong Provincial Autonomous Police Committee has launched a safety education initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of fixie bikes – a trend gaining popularity among teenagers – and to prevent related accidents. On June 9th, the committee conducted a "Visiting Youth Traffic Safety Education" session for approximately 160 sixth-grade students at Mosan Elementary School in Asan City, emphasizing the importance of safe fixie bike use.

 
Fixie Bikes: Popularity Hides Significant Risks

Fixie bikes are characterized by not having independent brakes on their wheels. Instead, riders must slow down by back-pedaling or by dragging their feet on the ground to stop. This unique braking mechanism, combined with their high speed and flashy appearance, has made them extremely popular among young people, particularly teenagers.

However, a major concern is that fixie bikes are not classified as bicycles under the Road Traffic Act due to their lack of a braking system. This classification means they cannot use sidewalks or bicycle paths and are restricted to roadways. Furthermore, their high speeds and the fact that most users do not wear essential safety gear like helmets significantly increase the risk of severe injuries in the event of a collision. Despite these inherent dangers, the growing number of young people riding fixie bikes has led to increasing concerns about safety accidents.

 
Sharing Accident Cases and Emphasizing Legal Compliance

In light of these risks, the South Chungcheong Provincial Autonomous Police Committee organized this education to raise awareness and reduce accident risks. During the session, Superintendent Choi Kwon-hoon from the Provincial Autonomous Police Committee, acting as an instructor, enhanced students' understanding by vividly presenting traffic accident cases through videos and other audiovisual materials. He also clearly explained relevant traffic laws and safety rules related to fixie bike use, urging compliance.

Superintendent Choi emphasized that for safe fixie bike use, it is essential to install brakes and wear safety gear such as helmets. He specifically cautioned that zig-zag riding or riding in groups could constitute violations of safe driving obligations or prohibited joint dangerous acts under the Road Traffic Act, potentially leading to penalties.

 
Ongoing Traffic Safety Education to Promote Youth Safety

An official from the South Chungcheong Provincial Autonomous Police Committee stated, "Going forward, we will continue to conduct traffic safety education by visiting elementary and middle schools across the province to ensure youth traffic safety." The official added, "We will continuously strive to help young people correctly recognize the importance of traffic safety and protect themselves and others." This education is expected to increase awareness of dangers, prevent potential accidents, and contribute to the establishment of a safer traffic culture among young people.
