Another sexual misconduct case has emerged in the political sphere, once again sparking public outrage. This time, the controversy grew as Kang Mi-jung, the former spokesperson for the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, resigned from the party, citing issues with how it handled a sexual misconduct case within its ranks. This is not merely a matter of one individual's departure; it's a serious issue that raises doubts about the political sphere's chronic lack of gender sensitivity and allegations of cover-ups and downplaying of the incident.

In a press conference, former spokesperson Kang revealed that she "faced sexual harassment, sexual assault, and bullying from those she believed were her comrades," and claimed that the party turned a blind eye to the victims' pleas. She exposed that the party's ethics and personnel committees were filled with people close to the perpetrators, and that demands for an external investigation body were ignored for over a month. She further stated that during this process, the victims were subjected to secondary victimization, and that five months after the incident was reported, no victim support measures were put in place, ultimately leading the victims to leave the party.

In response to former spokesperson Kang's revelations, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party explained that it had accepted all of the victims' demands in accordance with the party constitution and regulations. However, their explanation failed to quell public criticism. Instead, the news that the Democratic Party of Korea launched an investigation into Choi Kang-wook, the director of the party's education and training institute, who is under suspicion of secondary victimization in connection with this case, further highlighted the seriousness of the situation. Director Choi has a history of facing a heavy disciplinary action of a six-month suspension of his party membership for previous remarks of sexual harassment and his misogynistic comment, “The female dogs are running amok.” The fact that an individual with a history of repeatedly causing trouble with such comments held a key position within the party itself clearly demonstrates the Innovation Party's lack of gender sensitivity.

Repeated Sexual Misconduct, Broken Trust

Sexual misconduct cases involving former high-ranking officials such as former South Chungcheong Province Governor Ahn Hee-jung, former Busan Mayor Oh Keo-don, and former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon have shocked South Korean society. However, despite these scandals, controversies over sexual misconduct in the political sphere continue unabately. This suggests that politicians either do not fully grasp the seriousness of the issue or that there are ongoing attempts to cover up crimes involving power and hierarchical relationships.

Sexual misconduct in politics is not merely a matter of individual deviance. It is a serious issue that destroys the trust of the entire community. The public expects politicians to have morality and ethics, but repeated sexual misconduct cases betray that expectation and deepen cynicism and distrust of politics. In particular, in today's world where the term 'gender sensitivity' is not unfamiliar, the fact that politicians, who should be advocating for women's rights and equality, are instead becoming perpetrators of sexual misconduct and secondary victimization, is a contradiction in itself.

A Thorough Investigation and Extraordinary Measures Are Necessary

Given that former spokesperson Kang's resignation is not merely an emotional act but rather an act of whistleblowing, a more thorough investigation of this incident is required. The Cho Kuk Innovation Party must transparently address the allegation of ignoring the request for an external investigation body and conduct a thorough investigation into those suspected of secondary victimization. The Democratic Party of Korea must also show its commitment to eradicating sexual misconduct through its investigation of Director Choi.

Furthermore, all political parties should use this incident as a wake-up call to prepare extraordinary measures to prevent recurrence. The problem cannot be solved with a perfunctory ethics committee or a slap-on-the-wrist punishment. An independent external committee must be established to handle sexual misconduct cases fairly and transparently, and victim protection and support systems must be strengthened. Most importantly, it is crucial to induce a change in politicians' consciousness by making gender sensitivity education mandatory. This should not be limited to simple lectures or video viewings but should involve practical discussions and feedback to help them realize the serious consequences of sexist remarks and actions.

The political sphere must no longer dismiss sexual misconduct cases as individual deviance or matters that tarnish the party's honor. This is a sensitive issue for the entire society and a test of the morality and responsibility of politics. The Cho Kuk Innovation Party and the Democratic Party of Korea must use this incident as a lesson and show their firm resolve to root out the problem of sexual misconduct through their actions. Otherwise, the public will withdraw its last bit of trust in the political sphere.
