Seoul, South Korea – Former SM Entertainment CEO Lee Soo-man is making headlines once again, with industry insiders speculating about his return to the K-pop scene. Since late last month, a series of videos featuring young individuals dancing and singing have been uploaded to YouTube under the A2O Entertainment channel. While the videos do not explicitly state who is behind them, the inclusion of the phrase "Produced by S.M. Lee" has led many to believe that the legendary K-pop producer is involved.
The videos have sparked discussions about Lee's potential return to the music industry after his departure from SM Entertainment in March 2023. Notably, the videos feature a group of aspiring artists referred to as "rookies," suggesting that Lee is grooming a new generation of K-pop idols.
Lee has introduced a new term, "Zalpha Pop," in these videos, indicating his intention to target the combined Z and Alpha generations globally. This aligns with his previous statements about evolving K-pop into a truly global music genre.
However, Lee's return to the industry raises questions about a non-compete clause he signed with HYBE Corporation when he sold his SM Entertainment shares in February 2023. The clause reportedly prohibits Lee from producing music in South Korea for three years. Lee's team has argued that his activities with A2O, which is based in Singapore with offices in the US, Japan, and China, do not violate this clause as the focus is on global, rather than domestic, markets. HYBE has yet to comment on the matter.
As the K-pop industry eagerly awaits further developments, it remains to be seen whether Lee Soo-man's new venture will reshape the global music landscape.
