Gimhae, South Korea – Gimhae City has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to reduce plastic waste. The city's reusable container supply program, implemented as part of its carbon neutrality initiative, has surpassed 1 million units in the past year.
By providing reusable containers for funerals and various events, as well as reusable cups in public cafes within government buildings, Gimhae has successfully reduced disposable waste by 50 tons and carbon emissions by 139 tons. This is equivalent to the carbon sequestration of 21,000 pine trees.
Since 2022, Gimhae has been at the forefront of the nationwide movement to reduce plastic waste. The city has been providing reusable containers, cups, and recycled ice packs to private funeral homes, public cafes, and small businesses. To support this initiative, a state-of-the-art cleaning facility was opened in Andong in November 2023, significantly increasing the city's cleaning capacity.
The program has not only reduced environmental impact but also created jobs for vulnerable populations. The cleaning facility is operated by the Gimhae Community Rehabilitation Center, providing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Gimhae Mayor Hong Tae-yong expressed his commitment to promoting a plastic-free lifestyle. “As a leader in reusable container initiatives nationwide, we are developing a comprehensive plan to reduce plastic waste in our daily lives," Mayor Hong said. "We encourage all citizens to actively participate and support our efforts to make reusable containers and eco-friendly banners a part of our daily lives."
