Lima, Peru – January 23, 2025 – Peru’s second anchovy fishing season has concluded with record-breaking results, the Ministry of Production announced today. With a total catch of over 2.4 million metric tons, exceeding 95% of the established quota, the season marks the highest catch in the last decade.
Minister of Production, Sergio González, attributed the successful season to responsible and sustainable fishing practices authorized by the ministry. This approach has led to a significant increase in exports, generating over US$1.4 billion in revenue.
"The high level of catches is a testament to the responsible and sustainable management of fisheries authorized by the Ministry of Production," said Minister González. "This has not only boosted exports but also supported approximately 50,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country."
The ministry also announced plans to invest in modernizing local markets. Three new markets will be constructed in Reque, Lambayeque; San Agustín, Junín; and Ignacio Escudero, Piura, at a total cost of over S/37 million. These projects aim to improve commercial infrastructure and support local businesses.
"This is a significant investment that will modernize our markets and strengthen domestic trade," said Minister González.
Government Supports Small Businesses
The Ministry of Production continues to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through the "Compras a MYPErú" program. Over S/100 million has been allocated to purchase police uniforms produced by SMEs, and more than S/185 million has been invested in manufacturing clothing for students in remote areas.
The positive results of the anchovy fishing season and the government's ongoing support for the fishing industry and local markets have bolstered economic growth in Peru.
