Lisbon, Portugal - Portugal has seen a dramatic increase in American residents over the past seven years, according to data from Público and the US Embassy. In 2017, the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) recorded 2,888 US citizens residing in the country. However, recent figures from the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), cited by the US Embassy, reveal a staggering 20,959 Americans now call Portugal home.
The surge is particularly pronounced in recent years. In 2024 alone, approximately 4,800 new American residents were registered. This represents an almost 50% increase compared to 2023, when 14,126 Americans were regularized. This figure accounts for 1.35% of the total number of foreign residents in Portugal.
The influx of Americans is further highlighted by their leading role in Portugal's "golden visa" program. In 2023, North Americans topped the list of visa recipients, with 567 concessions granted.
Additionally, data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) confirms that Americans are the primary applicants for Portugal's "digital nomad visa," designed for remote workers. This trend has been consistent throughout 2023 and 2024, indicating a growing interest in Portugal as a destination for professionals seeking a flexible lifestyle.
This significant rise in American residents underscores Portugal's growing appeal as a desirable location for both investment and lifestyle, attracting individuals seeking opportunities and a high quality of life.
