DAEJEON — The Daejeon Metropolitan Government hosted the 2026 Daejeon Youth Communication and Empathy Event, titled the "Silent Film Festival & Concert," on the night of the 14th at the South Gate Square of Daejeon City Hall. The event was attended by Daejeon Mayor Huh Tae-jung and members of the city council.

The event was initially organized for 150 pre-registered young adults, but with on-site registration, more than 200 citizens ultimately participated.

The program proceeded in the order of ▲ the Silent Film Festival, ▲ a Director's Talk, and ▲ a Silent Concert. The unique format required attendees to wear headphones to block out ambient noise, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the films and music.

Two award-winning short animated films were screened: Director Kang Hanna’s "Passing," which explores human relationships and connections, and Director Seo Sae-rom’s "Swimming," which delves into the unconsciousness of oneself and others. Both works share a common theme of "connection," offering deep insights for young people contemplating life and human relationships.

Following the screenings, an after-talk session took place with "Swimming" director Seo Sae-rom to discuss the film. Mayor Huh Tae-jung and youth representatives also joined the conversation, discussing contemporary youth issues, the films, and Daejeon’s youth policies.

Participating youths asked questions regarding film and youth policy, shared their thoughts, and resolved their curiosities.

The event concluded with a performance by singer-songwriter Lee Je-in, known for songs that resonate with the younger generation, providing a relaxing musical concert under the autumn night sky.

Daejeon Mayor Huh Tae-jung stated, "This was a valuable opportunity to hear the vivid voices of young people living in Daejeon regarding what they think and what they need most. Going beyond simply formulating policies for youth, the city plans to implement youth policies in a direction where young people themselves voice their needs, directly execute policies, and even lead evaluations." He added, "We will build 'Youth Special City Daejeon,' a city where young people can work, live, and enjoy life through the triad of employment (職), housing (住), and leisure (樂)."

Meanwhile, as part of the 2026 Daejeon Youth Communication and Empathy events, the city plans to hold the "Youth Festa" at Expo South Gate Square on November 7th and the "Mobile Policy Cafe" at Hanbat National University on November 17th.
