Connecting the memories embedded in Jinan's labor and lives with the industrial traces of WL4

The arts group SunnyPlant (Representative Kim Moon-gu), selected for the "2026 International Cultural and Arts Exchange Support Project" by the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Foundation for Culture & Tourism (hereinafter referred to as the Foundation), will present "SPACE RITUAL" at WL4-Mleczny Piotr in Gdańsk, Poland, on October 17.

Based in Jinan, SunnyPlant constructed this work upon the sounds, movements, and ritualistic elements of the Jinan Jungpyeong Nongak (farmers' percussion music). The performance captures the memories of labor and the emotional sentiments of life found in the work songs and creative poems of the village elders.

The performance venue, WL4-Mleczny Piotr, located within the Gdańsk Shipyard, is a building formerly used as a warehouse for ship furniture. In 2018, artists established their studios here, transforming the space into a hub for creation, exhibitions, and performances.

Under the subtitle "The Body Awakening Space," the piece connects the traces of industry and labor remaining in the venue with the lives and memories of Jinan's villages. The cast will perform while moving across various parts of the space, allowing the audience to experience firsthand how traditional Korean sounds and movements harmonize with the venue.

Representative Kim Moon-gu of SunnyPlant is in charge of planning and documentation. The performance features Art Director Kim Sun-yi, along with Lee Seung-chul (Chairman of the Jinan Jungpyeong-gut Preservation Association), Kim Seok-jung (Representative of ‘Suseuro Chum’), Kim Seo-won (Sound Artist), and Lee Pyeong-hwa (Blacksmith).

SunnyPlant Art Director Kim Sun-yi stated, "This performance goes beyond simply introducing traditional Korean arts; it is a work capturing the process where the life and memories of one region meet the space of another country to create a new resonance. I hope that the audience and artists joining this process will share each other's experiences and build new memories and connections."

Choi Young-gyu, Secretary General of the Foundation, remarked, "It is meaningful to present a work imbued with the life and sentiments of Jeonbuk in Poland. We hope this performance will serve as an opportunity for local culture to reach out to the world and build empathy with international audiences."

Meanwhile, the "2026 International Cultural and Arts Exchange Support Project" supports international cultural and arts exchange activities of local art groups to strengthen their creative capacity and competitiveness, while providing opportunities for overseas expansion. This year, the project is supporting exchanges with countries such as Japan and France for a total of nine groups.
