VATICAN CITY – In a profound cautionary message addressed to the global community, Pope Leo XIV has raised concerns over the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), urging that technological innovation must be guided by the preservation of human dignity.

In a message released by Vatican News on the 24th (local time) ahead of the 60th World Communications Day scheduled for May 17, the Pontiff emphasized that AI systems—particularly those capable of mimicking human voices, faces, and emotions—risk eroding the essential dimensions of human connection.

The Sanctity of the Human Image
The Pope grounded his argument in theological and existential terms, stating that humans are created in the image of God and called to relationships through the "Word."

"Protecting the face and the voice is protecting the divine spark within each individual," the message read. He warned that as AI becomes more adept at simulating human identity, the "irreplaceable vocation" of human life faces a new kind of technical encroachment.

The Erosion of Critical Thought
Pope Leo XIV expressed specific concern regarding the synergy between AI and social media algorithms. He argued that these digital environments prioritize rapid emotional reactions over deep reflection, thereby weakening critical thinking and fueling social polarization.

The Pontiff highlighted a growing "dependency" on AI for information, creativity, and decision-making. He warned that as society leans more heavily on automated systems, core human faculties—such as analytical ability, imagination, and personal responsibility—may begin to atrophy.

In a world where chatbots and automated agents increasingly influence public discourse and personal choices, the Pope noted that the line between reality and simulation is becoming dangerously blurred, potentially destabilizing social and cultural life.

A Call for Global Accountability
To mitigate these risks, the Pope proposed a tripartite framework for the future: Responsibility, Collaboration, and Education.

Accountability: He called upon tech developers, politicians, and media professionals to prioritize transparency and guarantee the integrity of information.
Human-Centric Design: He urged that technical progress be harnessed to serve humanity rather than diminish the value of the individual.
Literacy: The message emphasized the urgent need for "AI and Information Literacy," teaching citizens how to navigate a world of deepfakes and algorithmic manipulation.
