Brussels, Belgium – The European Union (EU) has officially welcomed Bulgaria and Romania as full members of the Schengen Area, effective January 1, 2025. This historic decision marks a significant milestone in the two countries' integration into the EU and will lead to the removal of border checks at internal land borders.
The Council of the EU announced the decision on Thursday, highlighting the benefits it will bring to both Bulgarian and Romanian citizens, as well as the EU as a whole. By joining the Schengen Area, these countries will enhance their security cooperation within the bloc and facilitate the free movement of people and goods.
Since joining the EU, Bulgaria and Romania have already implemented parts of the Schengen acquis, including border controls, police cooperation, and the use of the Schengen Information System. The final step, the removal of internal border checks, is now set to take effect in early 2025.
Both Bulgarian and Romanian officials have expressed their satisfaction with this decision, viewing it as a recognition of their contributions to European security and their commitment to the EU project. The full integration into the Schengen Area is expected to strengthen the economic and social ties between the two countries and the rest of the EU.
