MANILA, Philippines - Global fast-food giant McDonald's has renewed its master franchise agreement in the Philippines, extending its partnership with its local counterpart for another 20 years until 2045.
Under the new agreement, McDonald's will retain the exclusive rights to own, develop, operate, and franchise McDonald's restaurants across the Philippines.
Golden Arches Development Corporation (GADC), led by Chairman George Yang, has been operating McDonald's Philippines since the first store opened in the country in 1981. There are currently 792 McDonald's stores across the Philippines, with a significant concentration in the Metro Manila area.
Reflecting on the early days of the franchise, Chairman Yang recalled applying for the rights in the late 1970s. "Back then, I confidently spoke of ten stores," he said, adding, "This year, we will be opening our 800th store."
McDonald's Philippines has introduced several 'firsts' to the local quick-service restaurant industry. In 2009, it launched the country's first online delivery platform, followed by the McDelivery app in 2014.
Beyond being a food service provider, McDonald's has significantly contributed to the Philippines' economic development and job creation. Through its nationwide store expansion, GADC provides employment opportunities to numerous locals and collaborates with the Philippine agriculture and food industries, thereby boosting the local economy.
Furthermore, McDonald's Philippines actively engages in social responsibility initiatives. Through the Ronald McDonald House Charities, it operates various programs aimed at improving children's welfare, including education and medical support, demonstrating its commitment as a socially responsible corporation.
The renewal of the franchise agreement reaffirms the long-standing trust and successful partnership between McDonald's and GADC. Over the next 20 years, McDonald's is expected to further solidify its position as a beloved brand in the Philippine market through continuous growth and innovation.
Particularly in the era of digital transformation, the company is anticipated to strengthen its online and mobile platforms and focus on developing customer-centric services. Moreover, it is likely to respect the diverse food culture of the Philippines and strive to develop localized menu options.
