Daejeon City is set to fully launch the 'New Village Urban Regeneration Project' in the Daeheung-dong area of Jung-gu, investing a total of 30.9 billion won to improve the residential environment and restore vitality in the old city center.
After the Daeheung district in Jung-gu was selected as a 'New Village Project' site in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's urban regeneration public contest in December 2024, Daejeon City formalized the project's commencement by going through administrative procedures and announcing the 'Urban Regeneration Revitalization Plan' on June 30th.
This project will be carried out over five years, from 2025 to 2029, targeting the area around 309-11 Daeheung-dong, Jung-gu (approximate area of 73,000 ㎡), with a total project cost of 30.9 billion won. Of this, 15 billion won will come from national funds, 15 billion won from Daejeon City and Jung-gu local funds, and 889 million won from other sources.
Daeheung-dong, once a prosperous area due to the presence of the Daejeon Provincial Government Office, has seen its residential environment significantly deteriorate due to population decline, industrial stagnation, and aging infrastructure. This project focuses on resolving these issues and fundamentally improving the residential conditions.
Notably, many life-oriented projects with high resident impact are included. Key initiatives include: ▲improving alleyways and street environments, ▲expanding safety infrastructure such as crime prevention CCTVs and security lights, ▲creating a multi-purpose community center, and ▲securing self-supporting parking facilities.
To ensure the smooth progress of the project, Daejeon City plans to secure national funding and invest municipal funds, strengthen advisory systems with urban regeneration experts, gather opinions from local residents, and enhance inter-departmental collaboration. Furthermore, the city intends to promote housing supply activation through future support for autonomous housing maintenance projects and consulting for resolving landlocked properties.
A Daejeon City official stated, "The New Village Urban Regeneration Project will serve as an opportunity to inject new vitality into the stagnant old city center. We will do our best to bring about practical changes such as improving residents' quality of life and residential conditions. We will continue to actively discover national public contest projects to continuously expand the foundation for urban regeneration."
