MILAN, Italy — The South Korean women’s short track speed skating team once again proved their undisputed global dominance, securing their seventh Olympic gold medal in the 3,000m relay. The victory, marked by a thrilling comeback, cements Korea's legacy as the "Relay Powerhouse" of the winter games.
A Dramatic Finish in Milan
On February 18 (local time), the quartet of Choi Min-jeong, Kim Gil-li, Noh Do-hee, and Shim Suk-hee finished first in the women's 3,000m relay final at the Milan Ice Skating Arena with a time of 4:04.014.
The race was a masterclass in patience and tactical execution. For the majority of the heat, Korea trailed behind powerhouse contenders Italy and Canada, holding steady in third place. However, the tide turned with just four laps remaining:
The Surge: Veteran Choi Min-jeong ignited the comeback, taking a powerful push from Shim Suk-hee to propel herself into second place.
The Clincher: Final runner Kim Gil-li executed a brilliant overtake against Italy’s legendary Arianna Fontana. Kim maintained her lead through the final two laps, crossing the finish line to a roaring crowd.
20 Years of Dominance
This victory marks Korea's seventh gold medal in this specific event since it became a staple of the Olympic program. Since the 1994 Lillehammer Games, South Korea has won 7 out of the 10 available gold medals in the women’s 3,000m relay.
The team’s consistency is unparalleled. They achieved a historic four-consecutive gold streak from 1994 to 2006. Even after a controversial disqualification at the 2010 Vancouver Games, the team bounced back to win in 2014 (Sochi) and 2018 (Pyeongchang). After taking silver in Beijing 2022, this Milan victory represents a triumphant return to the top of the podium.
Individual Milestones
The win is particularly significant for Shim Suk-hee, who has now secured her third career Olympic relay gold (2014, 2018, 2026), joining an elite tier of decorated winter athletes.
The contrast between the women’s and men’s programs remains stark. While the women’s team has dominated the relay for over two decades, the South Korean men's team has only secured the 5,000m relay gold twice in Olympic history (1992 and 2006).
