PARAMONGA-BARRANCA, Peru – Minera Paltarumi, a gold ore processing company committed to responsible mining, has launched the first zoo refuge for rescued wildlife in the Paramonga-Barranca region. The facility, operating under the supervision of the National Forest and Wildlife Service (Serfor), aims to provide a safe haven for vulnerable wild animals rescued from illegal trafficking, unauthorized possession, and other hazardous situations.

The refuge represents a significant step towards integrating conservation efforts with mining operations. "This refuge is a tangible demonstration that responsible mining and nature conservation can go hand in hand," stated Jimmy Pflucker, the principal shareholder of Minera Paltarumi. "We want to show that well-managed mining is possible and can be an ally for the preservation of wildlife and ecological balance."

Currently, the zoo is home to eight motelo turtles and is preparing to receive a variety of other species, including semi-aquatic turtles, primates, parrots, macaws, birds of prey, and coatis. Many of these animals arrive in poor condition, suffering from mistreatment, malnutrition, and injuries sustained from illegal activities or accidents.

To ensure the animals' well-being, Minera Paltarumi has enlisted a team of zootechnical engineers from the National Agrarian University La Molina, experts in wildlife and domestic fauna management. These professionals will oversee the animals' care, rehabilitation, and long-term health.

Serfor will conduct regular inspections to monitor the refuge's conditions and ensure that the animals receive proper care. The facility adheres to strict biosecurity protocols, with enclosures designed to meet the specific needs of each species, including adequate space, specialized diets, environmental enrichment, and veterinary care.

The establishment of this zoo refuge highlights Minera Paltarumi's commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable practices within the mining industry. By providing a safe environment for rescued wildlife, the company is demonstrating that responsible mining can positively impact the environment and contribute to the preservation of Peru's rich biodiversity.
