SEOUL – The forensic analysis of the mobile phone belonging to former Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Lim Sung-geun, a central figure in the investigation into the death of Marine Corporal Chae and allegations of external pressure on the probe, is set to resume on April 30th. This development follows a previous attempt that was thwarted due to a disagreement over recording the screening process.

Commander Lim, who is under investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), had initially refused to participate in the forensic screening on April 23rd. His refusal stemmed from the CIO's denial of his request to record the process, which he argued was necessary to document his opinions. The Criminal Procedure Act mandates the presence of the involved parties and their legal representatives during digital evidence seizures.

The CIO had seized Commander Lim's phone in January of last year but faced significant obstacles as the device remained locked. Despite securing some data, they were unable to fully access the phone's contents. An attempt to have the National Police Agency unlock the device also proved unsuccessful.

In a surprising turn, Commander Lim announced on his online platform that he would no longer insist on recording the screening. "After careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw my request for recording permission," he stated, emphasizing his desire for a swift and conclusive investigation. He also mentioned that he had requested the earliest possible resumption date, resulting in the rescheduled session on April 30th.

This reversal comes after Commander Lim participated in the first screening process in August of the previous year without raising any recording-related objections. The CIO, having secured some data independently, is now focusing on analyzing that information.

The resumption of this forensic analysis is crucial in the ongoing investigation into Corporal Chae's death and the alleged external pressure, which has garnered significant public attention. The outcome of this analysis could potentially provide critical insights into the circumstances surrounding the case and the allegations against Commander Lim. As the investigation progresses, the public and the involved parties await the results with keen interest.
