LOS ANGELES — The progressive political momentum in the United States has notched another major milestone. Nithya Raman, a city lawmaker supported by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has unseated the incumbent mayor in Los Angeles, signaling that the nation's major urban centers are increasingly embracing left-wing economic policies.

Election tallies released on Thursday confirmed that Raman captured roughly 52 percent of the vote, edging out longtime incumbent Karen Bass. The outcome marks the first time in over two decades that a sitting Los Angeles mayor has been denied a second term.

Raman, a Harvard and MIT-trained urban planner who immigrated from India, built her campaign around mounting public anxieties over housing affordability and the city’s stubborn unhoused population. Her strategic focus on everyday financial hardships has drawn frequent comparisons to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, earning her the descriptive title of the West Coast’s leading democratic socialist voice.

The mayoral race functioned as a direct rebuke of the traditional Democratic establishment. Despite receiving endorsements from high-profile party heavyweights—including former Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Gavin Newsom—Bass struggled to retain voter confidence following heavy criticism over local emergency responses and persistent economic pressures. Raman, meanwhile, capitalized on these vulnerabilities by pledging aggressive targets for expanding housing inventory and cutting street homelessness ahead of the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games.

This municipal upset is part of a broader national pattern. The recent midterms demonstrated that the DSA’s policy platform—which centers on robust public intervention in housing, transit, and social welfare—continues to resonate. Beyond the West Coast, similar left-leaning candidates secured mayoral leadership in Washington, D.C., echoing the progressive shifts previously observed in cities like New York and Seattle.

Federal politics are reflecting a similar transformation. DSA-backed candidates secured six seats in the House of Representatives during the recent midterms. Combined with prominent incumbent progressive lawmakers, the alignment's presence in Congress has quadrupled, showcasing a powerful internal shift that is steadily reshaping the hierarchy of the Democratic Party.
