South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump held a crucial bilateral summit on September 22, 2026, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The momentum for the summit was catalyzed by the formal selection of the 200-billion-dollar joint strategic investment framework's flagship project: the construction of the Encinal gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Texas. Peninsula Peace and Diplomatic Outlook

On regional security, the two heads of state underscored their roles as peacemakers and pacesetters to foster lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump reiterated his openness to engaging in dialogue with North Korea, noting his ongoing personal rapport with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. President Lee suggested utilizing diplomatic channels driven by Washington to navigate the current lull in inter-Korean communications. 

Furthermore, the leaders touched upon broader geopolitical coordinates, with President Lee expressing support for the historic upcoming U.S.-China summit between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
