The April ‘Independence Movement and the Press Edition’ education program was prepared to commemorate Newspaper Day, which was designated to mark the anniversary of the founding of 『The Independent』 (April 7, 1896), the first Korean-language and private newspaper.
The program consists of a self-guided tour of the exhibition halls where families can participate together every Saturday, and a workshop for children on the last Saturday, the 26th.
For the self-guided tour of the exhibition halls, educational activity cards will be provided to explore exhibits such as the first issue of 『The Independent』 and ‘radio broadcasts announcing Japan’s acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration and unconditional surrender’.
The workshop activities will include explanations of historical materials related to the press, as well as experiences such as ‘making my own bookmark’ decorated with 『The Independent』 and ‘promoting the independence movement and the press through social media’. It is expected that these activities will provide family visitors with an opportunity to reflect on the role and value of the press in the process of the independence movement.
Following April, the Independence Hall will continue to offer programs under various themes to help family visitors approach the history of the independence movement meaningfully and interestingly through the exhibits, such as ‘The Independence Movement and the Taegeukgi (Korean Flag)’ in May, ‘Objects of Independence Activists’ in June, ‘The Independence Movement and Women’ in September, and ‘The Independence Movement and the People’ in October. Detailed information and participation methods can be found on the Independence Hall website (http://i815.or.kr).
