The South Korean Men's Junior Handball Team has notched its first victory at the 2025 IHF Men's Junior World Championship in Poland. Despite an earlier elimination from the group stage, the young Taegeuk Warriors displayed unwavering determination, concluding their group play with a hard-fought win.

Under the guidance of Coach Kim Oh-kyun, the South Korean squad defeated the United States with a final score of 35-33 in their third and final Group C match on June 21st (local time) in Sosnowiec, Poland. This win brought their tournament record to 1-2, following earlier losses to powerhouse Sweden and regional rival Japan.

Group C of the championship featured South Korea, Sweden, Japan, and the United States. Sweden demonstrated dominant form, sweeping all three of their matches to secure the top spot and advance to the main round. Japan also progressed, finishing second in the group with a 2-1 record. South Korea, with their 1-2 record, placed third, while the United States finished at the bottom of the group, winless in three matches.

Against the United States, South Korea established a commanding lead from the outset. Lee Min-jun of Kyunghee University was a standout performer, contributing 6 goals and 6 assists, spearheading the team's offensive efforts. Kim Tae-hyun (Korea National Sport University) and Park Jun-hyeok (Sungkyunkwan University) also showed strong scoring contributions, reflecting a balanced attack. Through organized defense and swift counter-attacks, South Korea consistently pressured the American side, ending the first half with a significant 19-11 advantage. Although the U.S. mounted a fierce comeback in the second half, narrowing the gap, South Korea maintained composure and held onto their lead. Their effective defense in the closing minutes, particularly against America's aggressive push, secured the two-point victory.

Despite this crucial win, South Korea's two earlier losses in the group stage unfortunately meant they failed to qualify for the Round of 16. The team will now compete in the President's Cup, a classification round to determine rankings from 17th to 32nd place. South Korea has been placed in President's Cup Group 2, where they are scheduled to face Canada and Algeria.

Following the match, Coach Kim Oh-kyun expressed a positive outlook: "While we couldn't advance to the main round, securing a victory in our final group match has certainly boosted the players' confidence. We will use the remaining games in the President's Cup as an opportunity to further improve the players' skills and prepare for future competitions."

The 25th IHF Men's Junior World Championship is being held in Poland from June 19th to June 30th, 2025. This prestigious tournament features 32 participating nations vying for the title and is widely regarded as a crucial proving ground for future handball stars. While South Korean men's handball is a strong contender in Asia, the national team has historically faced challenges in breaking into the top ranks on the global stage.
