Samsung Electronics’ flagship cooperative initiative, Smart Factory 3.0, is proving to be a game-changer for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across South Korea. By fostering the creation of self-sustaining smart factory ecosystems in local regions, the program is driving regional economic growth and revitalization.
Launched in collaboration with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency, Smart Factory 3.0 provides SMEs with the tools and expertise needed to upgrade their manufacturing processes. Samsung matches the government's financial contributions, while the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency handles the recruitment, evaluation, and selection of participating companies.
A unique aspect of the program is the active involvement of previous beneficiaries. These SMEs have formed regional mentorship groups, such as the Samsung Smart CEO Forum in North Jeolla Province, to share their experiences and encourage other companies to participate. This grassroots approach has created a virtuous cycle of growth and knowledge sharing.
North Jeolla Province has taken the initiative even further by launching its own smart factory project, complementing Smart Factory 3.0. By providing partial funding to local SMEs, the province aims to accelerate the adoption of smart manufacturing technologies.
Smart Factory 3.0 is also playing a crucial role in addressing regional disparities. By prioritizing SMEs located in areas at risk of depopulation, the program is helping to boost productivity, increase sales, and stimulate economic activity. Since 2015, Samsung has supported over 3,274 smart factory projects nationwide. In May 2023, the company launched Smart Factory 3.0, which leverages AI and data analytics to transform manufacturing facilities into intelligent factories.
