Hyundai Rotem has officially made its debut in the North American tram market with the successful delivery of its first vehicle to Edmonton, Canada. The tram, which arrived at the city’s Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility on August 1st, marks a pivotal moment for the South Korean rolling stock manufacturer as it looks to expand its global footprint.

The delivery is the first installment of a significant contract, valued at approximately 218.8 billion KRW, that Hyundai Rotem secured in 2021. Each tram is composed of seven sections, designed to provide a modern and efficient public transit solution. Following a rigorous 2,000-kilometer testing phase, the vehicles will be deployed on the new Valley Line West, a crucial route connecting downtown Edmonton with the city's western communities. Hyundai Rotem plans to complete the delivery of all vehicles by 2027.

Designed to meet the unique challenges of Edmonton's harsh climate, where winter temperatures can plummet to -40°C, the trams are engineered for extreme durability and reliability. They feature an advanced interior climate control system that dynamically adjusts to temperature changes and are constructed from materials specifically chosen to resist low-temperature shock. These innovations ensure stable operation even under the most severe weather conditions.

Beyond their robust engineering, the trams also incorporate aesthetic and safety features tailored for the Canadian market. Red and white LED indicators, inspired by the national flag, are integrated along the sides of the vehicles. This design not only enhances their visual appeal but also improves nighttime visibility, contributing to safer operations.

This new venture in Canada builds upon Hyundai Rotem’s successful international track record, which includes tram projects in Izmir and Antalya, Turkey, as well as Warsaw, Poland. The company is also at the forefront of innovation with South Korea's first hydrogen-electric tram demonstration project, solidifying its reputation as a leader in advanced transit technology. With this entry into North America, Hyundai Rotem is strategically positioned to leverage its proven performance and technological expertise to capture a larger share of the global tram market. This landmark project in Edmonton could be the key to establishing a strong and lasting presence for the company across the continent.
