INCHEON, South Korea – A Korean couple has been convicted of assault and trespassing after a violent confrontation with their relatives over their terminally ill mother's property.

The Incheon District Court sentenced Mr. A, 62, and his wife, along with his younger brother Mr. B, 52, and his wife, to suspended prison terms of 6 to 10 months and community service for their roles in the incident.

The siblings had been feuding with their sister, Ms. C, over their mother's estate, valued at over 1 billion won. Their mother was in the final stages of pancreatic cancer, and Ms. C had taken her to live with her son, preventing her siblings from seeing her.

In an attempt to gain control of the inheritance, Mr. A and Mr. B devised a plan to take their mother away from their sister's home. They tricked their nephew's wife into opening the door by pretending to be neighbors, then forced their way into the house and assaulted her. They then took their mother from the home, but she died less than a month later in a nursing home.

Mr. A and his wife claimed their actions were justified as they were trying to rescue their mother, but the court rejected this argument. The court noted that they did not take their mother to the hospital immediately after the incident and that their actions could not be seen as an emergency evacuation.

The court also emphasized that the defendants had not been forgiven by the victims and that Mr. B and his wife had admitted their wrongdoing, which was taken into consideration in sentencing.
