Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services Accelerates Eco-Feed Industry via Netherlands Collaboration

South Korea’s Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services (Director Cho Eun-hee) announced that it successfully hosted the "Eco-Feed Development and Industrialization Workshop Utilizing Agricultural Byproducts" on September 10 at the Insect Research Institute training room.

The workshop was organized to scientifically evaluate the nutritional and functional value of industrial insects fed on local agricultural and food byproducts, while sharing advanced technological trends from Europe. Approximately 40 participants, including primary project leaders, insect industry representatives, and local farmers, gathered to exchange practical insights and discuss future research visions.

A key highlight of the event was the keynote presentation by Dr. Aria Rezaiepour from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Participating as an invited international expert, Dr. Rezaiepour delivered an in-depth lecture on advanced European insect feed research cases and the livestock immunological and nutritional value of insects fed with agricultural byproducts, commonly known as eco-feed.

Following the workshop, the Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services announced plans to immediately incorporate these global benchmarking results into its ongoing project titled "Development of a Customized Eco-Feed Production System," thereby significantly upgrading its overall industrialization strategy.

In recent developments, the Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services launched the "Feed Insect Swine Feed Research Task Force" to initiate empirical research aimed at reducing feed costs for pig farmers. Furthermore, it achieved a major milestone by becoming the first in South Korea to export an "Industrial Insect Mass-Rearing System" to three countries—Indonesia, Vietnam, and Japan—totaling USD 700,000 in export value. These achievements cement its position as a core hub for South Korea's insect industry.

Heo Yoon-sun, Director of the Insect Research Institute under the provincial agricultural technology agency, emphasized the urgency of the initiative. "To overcome the current crisis in livestock farming caused by surging feed costs, developing alternative feeds utilizing insects, known as eco-feed, is no longer optional but essential," Director Heo stated. "Building upon Chungbuk's proven insect industry capabilities demonstrated by our overseas export successes, we will continuously introduce practical technologies that directly benefit farming households by fusing them with advanced European expertise."

Insects have emerged as a premier solution to this crisis. Species such as the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) and mealworms possess an extraordinary ability to convert low-value organic waste—including agricultural and food processing byproducts—into high-quality protein and fat. This process not only addresses the feed cost crisis but also aligns perfectly with circular economy principles by reducing food waste and lowering the carbon footprint associated with conventional feed production.

The choice of Wageningen University as a partner for this initiative is strategically significant. Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in the Netherlands is globally recognized as a top-tier institution for agricultural and environmental sciences, particularly in the fields of circular agriculture and insect-based bioreactors. European researchers have pioneered various regulatory frameworks and technical standards for utilizing processed animal proteins and insect derivatives in animal feed, areas where South Korea is actively seeking to expand its regulatory and technical expertise.

By integrating European insights on livestock immunology, the Chungbuk research team aims to move beyond simple feed substitution. Modern livestock science increasingly recognizes that certain insect components—such as chitin, lauric acid, and antimicrobial peptides found in black soldier fly larvae—can actively boost the immune systems of animals like swine and poultry. This immunological benefit can potentially reduce the reliance on antibiotics in livestock farming, addressing another critical global health concern: antimicrobial resistance.

Furthermore, Chungbuk's recent export success of USD 700,000 to Indonesia, Vietnam, and Japan highlights South Korea's competitive edge in hardware and automation technologies for insect rearing. While European research excels in biochemical and nutritional analysis, South Korea has made remarkable strides in engineering automated, high-density mass-rearing systems that minimize labor costs and maximize production efficiency. Combining Dutch nutritional science with Korean agricultural engineering creates a powerful synergy that positions South Korea as a regional leader in agri-tech innovation.

Looking ahead, the "Customized Eco-Feed Production System" project is expected to serve as a blueprint for nationwide scaling. If local agricultural byproducts—which often incur disposal costs for farmers—can be systematically upcycled into premium livestock feed, it will create a multi-layered economic benefit: lower feed bills for livestock producers, reduced waste management burdens for crop farmers, and a thriving, export-oriented industrial insect sector. The recent establishment of the swine feed research task force marks a concrete step toward translating these laboratory findings into tangible, on-the-farm cost savings, signaling a transformative leap for South Korea's agricultural sector.
