The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Film Council will distribute a total of 4.5 million movie ticket discount coupons worth ₩6,000 each, starting at 10 AM on July 25th. This initiative aims to revitalize people's livelihoods through boosting domestic consumption and invigorating the film industry. It is being implemented with a budget of ₩27.1 billion from the 2nd supplementary budget for the new government in 2025.
These discount coupons can be obtained through the websites and apps of multiplex cinemas such as CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox, and Cine Q. Independent and art-house cinemas, small theaters, and senior cinemas, where issuing online coupons might be difficult, will offer discounts on a first-come, first-served basis on-site. The list of participating cinemas will be available on the Korean Film Council website starting July 25th.
Issued coupons can be used without daily restrictions until September 2nd. However, to provide benefits to more citizens, usage is limited to two tickets per person per venue. Coupons can be used immediately upon issuance, and a minimum viewing fee of ₩1,000 will still be charged even after the discount is applied.
Notably, this discount can be stacked with various existing discount benefits, such as "Culture Day" discounts, disability preferential discounts, senior preferential discounts, youth discounts, and morning show discounts. For instance, if this discount coupon is applied on "Culture Day," when movies can be watched for ₩7,000 on the last Wednesday of every month, a movie could be watched for just ₩1,000. Affiliate credit card billing discounts can also be stacked if they meet the minimum payment conditions for each card company, but telecom membership discounts cannot be used in conjunction.
An official from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism stated their hope that this discount support will allow citizens to enjoy movies during the upcoming summer vacation and holiday season, thereby revitalizing movie theaters. These discount coupons will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so they may be depleted early depending on regional circumstances. Any remaining coupons are planned for additional distribution in September.
