Bucheon, South Korea – In a move aimed at streamlining international travel for business professionals and fostering greater economic engagement within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) region, South Korea's Ministry of Justice and the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) announced the launch of a mobile version of the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC). Starting April 21, 2025, eligible business travelers will be able to apply for and utilize a virtual ABTC (VABTC) directly from their smartphones, marking a significant step towards digitalizing cross-border mobility.

The ABTC scheme, established in 1997, serves as a vital tool for facilitating business travel within the 21 APEC member economies. The card grants pre-cleared business travelers visa-free entry and access to dedicated fast-track lanes at airports in 19 participating economies, including major hubs like Japan, Australia, China, Singapore, and others. While the United States and Canada do not offer visa-free entry under the scheme, ABTC holders can still benefit from expedited immigration procedures in these nations.

Previously issued solely as a physical card, the introduction of the mobile ABTC is expected to significantly enhance convenience and efficiency for Korean business travelers. The VABTC resides securely on a smartphone application, eliminating the need to carry a physical card and allowing users to access real-time information about their card status. Immigration officials at participating airports will be equipped with the necessary technology to verify the authenticity of the mobile card through the application's robust security features.

One of the most anticipated benefits of the digital transition is the substantial reduction in processing time. The current wait for a physical ABTC can extend up to six months. The mobile application process is projected to shorten this period to approximately two months, providing a much faster turnaround for business professionals requiring frequent international travel within the APEC region.

According to KITA, as of March 31, 2025, South Korea ranks third among APEC economies with nearly 60,000 valid ABTC holders, underscoring the program's importance to the nation's business community. Eligibility for the ABTC includes executives and employees of companies demonstrating significant international trade or investment activities, as well as personnel from key business organizations such as the Federation of Korean Industries and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

To further enhance the user experience, KITA has revamped its online ABTC application system (available at https://abtc.kita.net). The updated platform now features a simulation tool that allows potential applicants to readily assess their eligibility before commencing the application process. Additionally, a dedicated call center (1566-5114) has been established to provide comprehensive guidance on application procedures and card usage.

South Korea's adoption of the mobile ABTC aligns with a growing global trend towards digitalizing travel documents and procedures. Australia pioneered the VABTC in 2021, and currently, 13 APEC economies have embraced the virtual format. This move by South Korea is expected to not only benefit its business community by simplifying international travel but also contribute to the broader APEC objective of fostering seamless cross-border economic activity and strengthening regional cooperation. The Ministry of Justice and KITA express optimism that this digital upgrade will significantly improve the ease of travel for Korean business professionals within the APEC region, ultimately bolstering international economic ties.
