Chungnam Province in South Korea has recently announced highly encouraging results from its latest evaluation regarding the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), signaling a strong momentum toward its long-term regional vision. The province recently hosted the final reporting meeting for the "4th Sustainable Development Indicators and Implementation Evaluation Research Project" at the provincial government annex conference room. Attended by members of the Sustainable Development Committee and Council, public officials, and research agency representatives, the session served as a comprehensive review of past milestones and a strategic stepping stone for future policies.

The core objective of this research project was to thoroughly assess the achievements of the "Chungnam Sustainable Development Goals 2030," which were initially established in 2018. It also evaluated the performance of the second-phase implementation plan spanning from 2021 to 2025, while establishing fundamental data to drive the execution of the upcoming "Sustainable Development Basic Strategy 2045." Through rigorous data analysis, the province measured tangible progress across multiple governance and societal sectors, confirming a solid trajectory of recovery and continuous growth.

Out of 55 evaluated indicators—excluding baseline indicators lacking sufficient historical data—an impressive 38 indicators, accounting for 69.1%, showed notable improvements compared to the baseline year of 2015. Key areas demonstrating widespread progress include quality education, gender equality, sustainable energy, industrial innovation and infrastructure, and sustainable cities and communities. These advancements reflect a balanced regional development strategy that integrates economic vitality with social inclusivity and environmental protection.

Furthermore, the proportion of indicators projected to successfully achieve their 2030 targets has experienced a steady and remarkable upward trend. During the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 to 2021, the achievement rate stood at 58.0%. However, this figure rebounded to 64.2% during the 2022-2023 period and further climbed to 65.4% between 2024 and 2025. This continuous recovery demonstrates that Chungnam's administrative response and policy frameworks have successfully navigated external global shocks and regained strong upward momentum.

A closer look at the sector-specific target achievement possibilities reveals balanced progress across different domains: the social sector led with 71.4%, followed by the economic sector at 58.9%, and the environmental sector at 58.3%. In the social sector, key achievements included the expansion of robust social safety nets and public service infrastructures. The economic sector benefited from strengthened industrial foundations and the promotion of a localized circular economy. Meanwhile, the environmental sector recorded substantial improvements in river water quality, energy efficiency, fine dust reduction, and the management of nature protection zones.

Building upon these diagnostic insights, Chungnam Province plans to utilize the evaluation outcomes as foundational data to upgrade its long-term grand strategy, known as the "Sustainable Development Basic Strategy 2045." Im Hyung-kyun, Director of the Balanced Development Policy Division, emphasized the significance of these findings, noting that the improvement of approximately 70% of the regional sustainable development indicators and the post-pandemic increase in goal-achievement rates represent meaningful milestones. The provincial government remains dedicated to refining its performance management systems, such as upgrading the official website, to ensure that local residents can genuinely perceive and experience sustainable improvements in their daily lives.
