Gyeongsangbuk-do (Gyeongbuk Province) has taken a significant step toward transforming promising local manufacturing SMEs into major players on the global stage. The province announced on the 15th that it is opening applications for the ‘2026 K-Global Leader Company Cultivation Project,’ aimed at nurturing small but powerful local enterprises with high growth potential into global export leaders.

◇ Intensive Support from Competency Diagnosis to Local Joint Ventures

The core of this project goes beyond simple market entry support. It provides an integrated solution covering the entire process of overseas expansion, including global competency diagnosis, establishing local partnerships, and even founding local joint ventures (JV).

Eligible applicants are manufacturing SMEs headquartered and operating factories in Gyeongbuk, with annual sales exceeding 14 billion KRW and direct/indirect export records of over 3 million USD in the previous year. The province plans to select eight companies that will lead the regional economy through a rigorous screening process and concentrate a total budget of 500 million KRW on their growth.

Selected companies will receive step-by-step customized programs, including: ▲ Global expansion competency diagnosis ▲ Product-Market Fit (PMF) verification ▲ Specialized consulting in law, accounting, patents, and marketing ▲ Matching with overseas buyers and partners ▲ Building global partnerships and support for establishing joint ventures. In particular, the province aims to preemptively address issues regarding certification, contracts, and localization—common hurdles in the early stages of overseas entry—to ensure substantial export results.

◇ Improving Export Structure through Market Diversification

This initiative is also a strategic move by Gyeongbuk Province to improve an export structure heavily biased toward specific countries. According to Korea International Trade Association (KITA) statistics, as of the first quarter of this year, 38.2% of Gyeongbuk's exports were concentrated in the U.S. and China. Through this project, the province intends to actively target emerging markets with high growth potential, such as Europe and India, thereby strengthening a "Gyeongbuk-style export foundation" that remains resilient against changes in external conditions.

"Diversifying export markets is a mandatory task to respond to the reorganization of global supply chains and to secure sustainable growth engines for regional industries," a provincial official emphasized.

◇ Expectations for Regional Economic Vitalization and Job Creation

The province expects this project to create a virtuous cycle where increased overseas sales of local manufacturers lead to expanded domestic investment and job creation. The vision is to help SMEs—which possess sufficient technological prowess but lack experience in overseas markets—successfully settle in the global market through a professional support system.

Lee Jae-hoon, Director General of the Economic and Trade Bureau of Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, "With the strengthening of protectionism and rapid changes in the global trade environment, the challenges faced by local companies are more intense than ever. We will spare no administrative or financial support at the provincial level to ensure that local companies with potential can leap forward as global export leaders representing Gyeongbuk."

Meanwhile, detailed recruitment notices for the project can be found on the websites of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Economic Promotion Agency and GDIN. Applications will be accepted until May 29.
