Seoul, South Korea – South Korea's postal service has introduced a new type of mailbox designed to be more environmentally friendly and convenient for users. The "Eco Mailbox," as it's called, features two separate slots, allowing residents to deposit parcels, used medicine, and spent coffee capsules alongside regular mail.
This marks a significant departure from the previous mailbox design, which had been in use for nearly 40 years. The new mailbox is constructed with steel, making it more durable and easier to recycle. Additionally, the parcel slot has been enlarged to accommodate smaller packages, providing a more convenient option for sending items through the postal service.
To track parcels sent through the Eco Mailbox, users can simply scan a QR code located on the mailbox or use the postal service's mobile app. A unique 16-digit tracking number will be generated, which should be written on the package before it's deposited.
The Korea Post has been expanding the scope of its services beyond traditional mail delivery. In 2023, it began accepting used medicine for disposal, and in October of this year, it added spent coffee capsules to its collection program. However, currently, only capsules from Dongsuh Foods' KanU brand are accepted.
To prevent contamination of the mail and to ensure the proper disposal of waste items, the Korea Post has warned that improper use of the Eco Mailbox, such as depositing cigarette butts or other litter, can result in penalties under the Postal Law.
With the introduction of the Eco Mailbox, the Korea Post aims to promote environmental sustainability and provide greater convenience to its customers.
